CONNECTICUT PILOT CAR REGULATIONS

When Permit Is Needed
Over 8'6" wide
Over 13'6" high
Trailer over 48' long
Over 80,000 lbs.

Times Of Movement
1/2 hour after sunrise to 1/2 hour before sunset; no weekend travel; no travel from 6:30-9am & 4-6pm
Loads over 13'6" wide or over 14' high can travel Tuesday thru Thursday 9:00am to 4:00pm
No travel
New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

When Pilot/Escort Vehicle is Required
Over 14’ high-1 front pilot w/ height pole
Over 15’ high & 15’ wide-1 front pilot & 2 rear pilots
Divided highways:
12' wide or under,100' long or under, mobile homes 10' wide or under, 80' long or under-no pilot car required
Over 12' wide, 120' long, mobile homes under 12' wide-1 rear pilot car required
Over 13'6" wide, over 120' long; mobiles over 12' wide or over 85' long-1 front & 1 rear pilot car required
Undivided highways:
12' wide or under, over 80' long, mobiles 10' wide or under, or over 80' long-1 rear pilot car required
Over 12' wide, over 100' long; mobiles over 10' wide, over 85' long-1 front and 1 rear pilot car required

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
Size
: Min. 60” wide; max. capacity 1½ ton
Signs: Mounted 48” above roadway (min.); black letters 8” high (min.) on yellow background: “OVERSIZE LOAD FOLLOWING”, ”OVERSIZE LOAD AHEAD”, ”WIDE LOAD AHEAD”, ”WIDE LOAD FOLLOWING”, ”LONG LOAD AHEAD” or ”LONG LOAD FOLLOWING”
Lights: Top mounted flashing or rotating amber lights visible for 1000’
Flags:  18” square on front or rear corners of vehicle whichever is appropriate
Additional equipment:  2-way radio communication between escort & load; red hand flag; red vest/jacket
