KANSAS PILOT CAR REGULATIONS

When Permit Is Needed
Over 8'6" wide
Over 14' high
Trailer over 59'6" long

Special Information Needed
Truck VIN (last 5)
Registered weight
KCC# & KS fuel # (for o/w only)

Times Of Movement
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset 7 days a week (even holidays); could be special conditions but will be noted on permit
Night movements allowed for overweight-only loads
Permit office closed on the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day

On highways less than 4 lanes:
Width more than 14'- 1 front, 1 rear
All highways:
Mobile homes over 12'6"- 1 front, 1 rear
Super loads: 1 front, 1 rear


Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
General: Passenger car or 2-axle truck; min. insurance required by state in which vehicle is licensed; min. 60” wide/max. 1 ton carrying capacity
Signs: “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign attached to front or top of vehicle; 18” x 5’ yellow w/ black letters 8” high w/ 1 1/8” brush stroke; visible 500’
Lights: 2 amber flashing lights (6” or larger) or one rotating or oscillating light on top of vehicle; visible 1000’;
Flags: Not stipulated
Additional equipment: 18” or 24” STOP/SLOW paddle sign; 8 reflective triangles or 8 red-burning flares; 3 orange 18” high cones; orange hard hat; height pole (non-conductive, flexible or frangible material ) when escorting a load exceeding 17” high; first aid kit; spare tire; tire jack & lug wrench; orange vest/jacket; 2(min.) 12” red/orange hand-held flags; 1 5lb. B,C, fire extinguisher

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator
Drivers of vehicles that intend to escort super loads within Kansas shall be come certified before operating in Kansas.  Applicants may become certified in two ways:
One (1) year - provided they have obtained another state certification, and possess a valid driver’s license.
Three (3) years - by providing evidence of possessing a CDL or is able provide evidence of passing a defensive driving course that has been approved by the National Safety Council. Must fill out “Escort Certification of Compliance Application.”
Must have in vehicle a copy of “Traveling Through Kansas”.
