Nevada has no ports of entry. Out-of-state truckers should obtain all necessary permits before entering the state. Cab Card Weight is 80,000 pounds. Maximum Operating Weight is 129,000 pounds.

Registration and Fuel Taxes

DMV Motor Carrier offices issue 24 hour permits (120 hours for buses) for temporary registration and special fuel taxes. Fees for registration are $5 plus 15 cents per mile. Special fuel permits are a flat $30. See Motor Carrier Office Locations.

Nevada issues a maximum of one 72-hour permit per 90 days per company. The Nevada Highway Patrol has contracted with

Oversize/Overweight Permits

DMV Motor Carrier issues annual permits for vehicles with multiple trailers and reducible loads that exceed 70 feet in length. Call (775) 684-4711

The Nevada Department of Transportation issues permits for over-dimensional vehicles/loads with any of the following characteristics: 

  • Non-reducible vehicles/loads that exceed:
    8 feet, 6 inches in width
    14 feet in height
    10 feet in overhang
    70 feet in length
    80,000 pounds
  • Reducible vehicles/loads that are less than 70 feet in length but exceed 80,000 pounds.
  • Motor trucks that exceed 40 feet in length.
  • Buses that exceed 45 feet in length.

NDOT permits are required throughout Clark County due to passage of Senate Bill 450 in the 2007 Nevada Legislature. Clark County no longer issues local permits.

Amber Light Permits

Hazardous Materials Annual Permit

Carriers must obtain hazmat permits from their base state. Permits for Nevada carriers are issued by the Nevada Highway Patrol. Call (775) 684-4622. Nevada is one of seven states participating in the Uniform State Hazardous Materials Registration and Permitting Program.
