RHODE ISLAND PILOT CAR REGULATIONS

When Permit Is Needed
Over 8'6" wide
Over 13'6" high
Trailer over 48'6" long

Special Information Needed
Registered weight; trailer license plate

Times Of Movement
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset; no weekend travel allowed
Travel prohibited on the following holidays:
New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas. If a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is also restricted.  If the holiday falls on Saturday, the previous Friday is restricted after noon.  If a holiday falls during the week, travels allowed up to noon on the day before the holiday.  The permit office will be close on these holidays plus Martin Luther King Day & Election Day.

When Pilot/Escort Vehicle is Required

Width over 12' up to 14'6"-1
Width over 14'6"-2
Length over 80' up to 90'-1
Length over 90'-2
Height over 14'-1
Overhang of 15' or more-1
Infrequent-overhang of 15' or more (example: 2-lane hwy w/ width 12' or more)-2
Building-with police escort-2
Cranes-interstate moves of 12' or over-2

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
General: At least as large as a compact car
Signs: Oversize load sign on front and/or rear depending on vehicle & load
Lights: Yellow lights (visible from front & rear) in operation above the highest point of the vehicle
Flags:
Additional equipment: 2-way radio
