Types of Permits Available |
Trip Permits -
When traveling to a state in which a vehicle is not registered under
IRP,
a temporary trip permit is needed for that state.
Fuel Permits - When traveling to a
state in which a vehicle does not hold an IFTA decal and license, a
temporary fuel permit is needed before entering that state.
Over Dimensional and Over Weight Permits
- If a vehicle is over dimensional (oversize) or overweight, a
temporary permit is needed. This permit authorizes movement
according to vehicle configurations and weight and contains routing
information, travel regulations/restrictions, and safety
requirements. See below for description of different permits.

Caltrans or California State Highway Permits
- A single trip permit is a permit issued for a qualifying load or vehicle
moving one way and returning unladen or with the same type of load, if
requested, within the specified time limits of the permit.
- Caltrans permits are only good on California State Highways
- Caltrans Permits are Valid for Seven Consecutive Days and take
between one hour to 1 day to issue.

Single Trip Permits |

- Single trip permits are the most common permits needed.
This permit is from a single origin to a single destination in one
direction of travel. These permits can take the form of Caltrans
(State Highways), or City or County permits.

Annual Permits
- One year duration from time of purchase.
- Legal Height only!
- 12' Wide
- Available with Legal, Green or Purple weight in California
- Caltrans, City and Counties issue annual permits

Repetitive (Multiple Trip) Permits
- Maximum of Six-Month Duration. Basically a single trip permit
for the delivery of the same load over the same route on a repeated
basis.

Variance Load Permits
- All applications over 14 feet in width, 135 feet in length, or
on special hauling equipment which does not fit the Department's
standard method of weight classification must be approved by special
processing. Written route reviews are required from the applicant
for heights greater than 17' 0".
