VERMONT PILOT CAR REGULATIONS

When Permit Is Needed
Over 8’6” wide; over 13’6” high; trailer over 68’ long

Special Information Needed
Vermont HUT#
Times Of Movement
½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset
Vehicles which are overweight only and are capable of traveling with the flow of traffic may travel 24hrs.
No weekend travel for loads greater than 108,000 lbs./10’6” wide/100’ long or on Friday afternoons (7/1-Labor Day) or on the following holidays
:  New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Day, July 4th, Veteran’s Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Presidents’ Day including the preceding Friday if a holiday falls on a Saturday and the following Monday if a holiday falls on a Sunday

When Pilot/Escort Vehicle is Required

Width of 12’ or more-1
Height greater than 14’-1 w/ height pole (as determined by DOT)
Length of 80’ or more-1
Overhang of 15’ or more-1
Large or hazardous moves-2 (front & rear; may need police escort)

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
Lights: Flashing amber light above the highest point of the vehicle; must be visible from the front & rear
Signs: Front escort vehicle must have a sign on the front of the vehicle
Rear escort vehicle must have a sign on the rear of the vehicle
“Oversized Load” signs at least 5’ long & 12” high; 10” high/1 5/8” wide letters; black on yellow
Additional equipment: Headlights on low beam

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator
