VIRGINIA PILOT CAR REGULATIONS

When Permit Is Needed
Over 8'6" wide
Over 13'6" high
Trailer over 48' long

Special Information Needed

Trailer serial #, need intersecting routes if origin and destination is inside VA plus county need federal id #

Times Of Movement
Normal times of travel for permitted loads:
½ hr. after sunrise to ½ hr. before sunset; M-Sat.; No Sunday travel
No travel on holidays observed in state: New Year’s, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas
Curfews in corporate limits of cities/towns: 7-9am & 4-6pm except for over height only or overweight only or combination
Loads exceeding 8’6” in width but less than 12’/14’ in height/125’ in length/115,000 lbs. GVW may travel on Sat. 1/2 hour after sunrise to noon.
No travel after noon on Saturday.  No Sunday travel.
No travel on the following holidays:
New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas
Curfews will be attached to permits for special conditions travel.

When Pilot/Escort Vehicle is Required

On 2- lane highways:
Width over 10' on all 2&3 lane-1 front
Over 12' wide or over 75' long need amber flashing lights or escorts with amber flashing lights,
Width over 12':
Through Big Walker Tunnel & East River Mt. Tunnel- 1 rear
Length over 85'-1 front
Height-permittee is responsible for all horizontal & vertical clearances, routes determine escort needs
Width over 14'7"-2 (front & rear on some routes)
On 4-lane/interstate highways:
Width over 10', length over 75', height under & over 14'6" all depend on routes

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle
Signs (visible day or night) must identify the type of load being escorted (i.e. “Wide Load”/”Oversize Load”/”Overdimensional Load”/”Overwieght Load”). Signs must have black letters 10”x1½” & must be 60” long x 12” high.
Lights: Must have flashing amber lights w/ strobe or rotating sealed beam; 5” dia. base; min. 4” lens height.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator
Virginia certification mandatory for all escort drivers regardless of residency for loads 12’-14’ wide.
Multiple-choice questions on Escort Driver’s Test based on
Virginia Driver’s Manual & Virginia Hauling Permit Manual
Test may be taken at any of the 14 DOH offices
Re-testing required to remain certified before expiration date on back of certification card.
